Manuel Avancena served as a field lineman with the Headquarters Company of First Battalion. He saw action on Namur, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima, where he was wounded in March, 1945. Avancena recovered from his wounds, and was honorably discharged on November 6, 1945.
He died in 1987, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Section 42, Site 2413.
