Woodrow Barfield was born in Alabama in 1919. He was raised in Broward County, Florida, and enlisted in the regular Marine Corps at the age of twenty. Three years later, he was assigned to the First Separate Battalion (Reinforced) at Camp Pendleton.

With Dog Company:

Sergeant Woodrow Barfield was one of the original members of Dog Company, 24th Marines. He served as a section leader with the company's 81mm mortar platoon. Barfield saw his first action during the battle of Namur, when his section of tubes fired in support of the advance on February 2, 1944. The following month, while stationed at Camp Maui, Barfield's company was disbanded. The mortarment were sent to the battalion's Headquarters Company.

With HQ Company:

Barfield participated in the Marianas campaign with the mortar section. After surviving the battles of Saipan and Tinian, Sergeant Barfield was transferred out of the battalion. His subsequent participation in World War Two is unknown, but he went on to serve in Korea and Vietnam before retiring as a sergeant major.

Woodrow Barfield died in California in 2003, and is buried in Eternal Hills Memorial Park, Oceanside.
