Loy Bates joined the regular Marines after the outbreak of World War Two. A talented musician, he quickly rose to the rank of Field Music Corporal despite his youth. Bates was assigned to the headquarters section of Headquarters Company, First Battalion.
Bates fell ill in the winter of 1943, and was hospitalized. He was not fit enough to ship out with the division when they sailed for Namur, and was transferred to the staff of Camp Pendleton on February 1, 1944.
Loy Bates died in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1993.
