Lewis Brinnon joined Battalion Headquarters in the spring of 1944. The sergeant was rated as a "classification specialist" - one who oversaw the assignments of other Marines. For example, if a company needed a new cook, Sergeant Brinnon was tasked with finding the best replacement in the battalion.

Brinnon went into combat on Saipan and Tinian, and prepared for the landing on Iwo Jima in the early months of 1945. He fell ill as the date of the invasion approached, and found himself transferred to the Corps Transit Center on February 3, 1945. Brinnon survived his illness, returning to the battalion in late March, 1945. He mustered out as a staff sergeant.

Lewis Brinnon died in Michigan in 2004. He is buried in Pinconning Township Cemetery.
