Lowell Buxton, a pre-war regular Marine, enlisted at the age of 20. He saw sea duty with the Marine detachments aboard the USS Savannah and the carrier USS Saratoga before being assigned to the newly-formed Fourth Marine Division.
With Dog Company:
Sergeant Buxton joined Dog Company, 24th Marines in the fall of 1943. He served with the company headquarters section in an unknown capacity (MOS 764) during the battle of Namur. In March, 1944, he was transferred to Battalion Headquarters.
With HQ Company:
Buxton was assigned the duty of Chemical NCO with the battalion's headquarters - in charge of decontamination and reaction to possible gas attacks. He served with Headquarters through the battle of Saipan, and transferred to Charlie Company on July 14, 1944.
With Charlie Company:
Sergeant Buxton fought through the battle of Tinian with Charlie Company, maintaining his position as Chemical NCO. He left the battalion in the fall of 1944.
Lowell Buxton stayed with the Marines after the war, finally retiring in 1950 as a technical sergeant. He died in Missouri in 1984, and is buried in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis.
