With Dog Company:

PFC Caldwell was one of the original members of Dog Company, 24th Marines. He served as an ammunition carrier with the 81mm mortar platoon during the battle of Namur, and transferred to HQ company when Dog was disbanded in the spring of 1944.

With HQ Company:

Caldwell continued to fight with the 81mm mortar platoon through the battles of Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. He survived the war unwounded.

Note: an obituary for Alexander Caldwell claims that Caldwell was a member of the "Raiders Division" and saw action at the battles listed above while aboard the USS Northampton. While it is possible that Caldwell was a transfer from one of the Raider battalions, the Northampton (CA-26) was sunk at the Battle of Tassafronga on November 11, 1942.
