Joseph Clayton was one of the original members of the Battalion Headquarters Company. He served as the battalion's senior cook from 1943 to 1945, and participated in all of the Division's battles.
Clayton died in Owensboro in 2000; he is buried in the town's Mater Dolorosa Cemetery.
