Jerry Culp was one of the original members of Headquarters Company. Mechanically minded and adept with military radios, Culp was the battalion's communications chief and oversaw radio traffic with First Lieutenant Thomas Kerr.
Culp was wounded and evacuated from Saipan on June 28, 1944; after several months in recovery, he rejoined the company and took up his previous position. Culp went on to serve through the battle of Iwo Jima, and ultimately survived the war.
He died in Springfield in 2003.
