Sergeant John Dearing was one of the original members of the Intelligence Platoon attached to Headquarters Company, First Battalion. As the senior enlisted man, he acted as section chief under Lieutenant Robert Selinger. After serving in the battle of Namur, Dearing was placed in charge of the section as Selinger transferred to Headquarters and Service Company.
Dearing was wounded and evacuated from Saipan on July 8, 1944. He did not return to combat.
