William Deshong joined Battalion Headquarters in the fall of 1944. He was rated as a rifleman, and probably served with the assault and demolitions team.

Deshong survived the battle of Iwo Jima unwounded, and returned to Pennsylvania after the war. He died in Greencastle in 1992, and is buried in St. Thomas Town Cemetery.
