Irving Deutch was attached to the Headquarters Company of First Battalion, 24th Marines, prior to the battle of Saipan. He served with the battalion's duty section as a photographer.

Corporal Deutch was present with the battalion during the battle of Saipan, and remained at the division's camp during the battle of Tinian.

Deutch transferred out of the battalion in the fall of 1944. In April, 1945, he took a photograph of a member of the Fourth Ammunition Company which would become moderately famous.
