With Dog Company:

Iowan James Dunkelberg was one of the original members of Dog Company, 24th Marines. He served as one of the field musics during training at Camp Pendleton, and traded his bugle for a stretcher at the battle of Namur.

Dunkelberg was transferred to the Battalion Headquarters company in March, 1944.

With HQ Company:

FM1c Dunkelberg continued to serve as a bugler with the company's headquarters section. He was wounded in action on June 24, 1944, while fighting on Saipan, but returned to duty the following day. Dunkleberg fought through the battle of Tinian, and left the battalion in the fall of 1944.

He died in Los Angeles in 1997, and is buried in Oak Park Cemetery, Claremont CA.
