Sergeant Charles Dunphy joined Battalion Headquarters on February 24, 1945. He had previously served with the 24th Replacement Draft. Dunphy was rated as a quartermaster mechanic; what little motorized traffic was available to the battalion needed constant attention during the battle of Iwo Jima, as Japanese fire and the fine gritty ash took a toll on jeep and truck engines.
Dunphy survived the war unwounded.
