John Gale was one of the original members of the Headquarters Company of First Battalion. He served as a scout with the intelligence platoon during the battles of Namur and Saipan.

Gale was badly wounded in the right arm while fighting on Saipan. He was immediately evacuated to a hospital ship, where the limb was amputated. Gale arrived at Naval Hospital #10 on July 29, 1944. He was honorably discharged for disability following his release.
