With Dog Company:
Private James Murphy was one of the original members of Dog Company's headquarters section. He served as a truck driver during training at Camp Pendleton and through the battle of Namur. Murphy was transferred to the battalion's Headquarters Company in March, 1944.
With HQ Company:
Murphy was promoted to Private First Class after his reassignment. He stayed as a driver through the battle of Saipan. Murphy was left at the battalion's camp on Saipan to act as a guard whilst the unit was in action on Tinian. He returned to Camp Maui with the company, and was transferred out of the battalion in the fall of 1944.
