With Dog Company:
John Reilly was one of the original members of Dog Company, 24th Marines. He served as an ammo carrier with the 81mm mortar platoon during the battle of Namur, and transferred to the battalion's headquarters company in the spring of 1944.
With HQ Company:
Reilly continued to serve with the mortars following his transfer. He fought on Saipan and Tinian, where he was twice evacuated for illness. PFC Reilly remained behind at Camp Maui when the division invaded Iwo Jima, and saw no further combat.
