Chief Cook Edward Nelson was one of the original members of Dog Company, 24th Marines. He served as the senior cook for the company until the unit disbanded in March, 1944; Nelson was transferred to the battalion headquarters company.
With HQ Company:
Nelson was promoted to Staff Sergeant and assigned to the position of Battalion Mess Sergeant, replacing Robert Lisenbery. He served in this capacity through the battles of Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima, ultimately surviving the war unwounded.
